KIEC Contributes to the Local Community

At Kogarah IEC we value the importance of volunteering and contributing to our local community. A group of students have been giving up their lunchtimes several times each week to crochet these amazing blankets which they donated today, to the Sydney Dogs and Cats Shelter in Carlton, to keep the animals warm and comfortable.

Canberra Trip - Term 3, 2019

Last term, students from Kogarah Intensive English Centre enjoyed an educational tour of the National Capital, Canberra. Before attending, they participated in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education.

To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Australian Government generously contributed funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs.

Australia’s capital city is Canberra. I went there with students from my school and some teachers on 22nd August 2019. I was nervous and happy. At first I didn’t have close friends with me, however I tried to talk with Thanisa.
She was sitting next to me on the bus. She's from Thailand. We both speak limited English and sometimes we had to rely on Google translation but we were happy to be speaking to each other.
When we arrived in Canberra, the Parliament House as the first place we visited. We walked around the Parliament House with a guide who explained everything in English. I tried to listen very hard so I could understand everything he said to us.
Next we went to the War Memorial. It was an amazing place and we learnt many things about Australian’s history and the involvement in past wars. There was so many things to see and learn.
After that we visited the Government House. It was a fantastic place and it was good for our memories and knowledge of Australia. The best part of this trip was learning about Australia and making new friends. Thanisa introduced her friends to me. They are pleasant and kind. At the end of the day, I didn’t want to come home because I saw so many beautiful things and I had great fun with my new friends.

Term 1 - 2019 - Graduation

Today, we had our graduation to farewell another set of student who will embark on another adventure of education in Australia. We wish you all good luck at your new high schools and all the best in your future endeavours.

2018 - Term 4 - Graduation

Term 4, 2018 we farewelled another group of amazing students who will be transitioning to high school and to other educational institutions. The graduation displayed all the talents we have at our school from academic achievements to drama to extra-curricular achievements. The students have gained not only confidence in writing, reading and speaking English but the life skills to enjoy life in their new country - Australia.

Great Results at the 2018 IEC Gala Day

The Annual IEC Gala Day was held today at Quaycentre Olympic Park Kogarah Intensive English Centre recorded amazing results this year.

Mr Ng, Ms Tweedie and Ms Lovat are extremely proud of the effort by all the students who participated. They all played with good sportsmanship and fair play during their matches. They also met many new students from other IECs and made new friendships.

2019 School Budget Allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Kogarah IEC has their first Filmpond movie. The movie was created by Mr Ng and the Filmpond staff. The film is about a photography program conducted by 3Bridges called Kogarah Through My Eyes.

Hugo Batbold Performs in Town Hall

Hugo Batbold was invited to perform at the Public Education Foundation Awards Night at the prestigious Sydney Town Hall. He played the Mohin Khuur (a Mongolian instrument).

He performed in front of the NSW Minister of Education Rob Stokes and thousands of spectators and award recipients.

Harmony Day celebrated at Sydney Sporting Schools

Sydney FC Community Football Manager and Rockdale City Suns FC player manager Paul Reid was in the thick of things when he visited Kogarah Intensive English Centre and delivered engaging fun games relating to football.

Each year, schools are invited to apply for funding from a government grant namely, the Sporting Schools. Sporting School is an Australian Government initiative which helps schools to increase the participation in community sport with a strong focus on schools.

Addressing the decline in sport participation in secondary schools

(Extract taken from the Australian Sports Commission website)

Research has shown a decline in sport participation for youth between 13-17 years old and that, in order to increase participation in this age group, sporting activities need to be designed to meet their motivations and interests.

In partnership with the sport and education sectors and La Trobe University, the ASC ran pilot programs across 100 schools in Australia to test sporting products and intervention strategies to keep youth engaged in sport, through secondary schools.

As a result, the ASC has produced a suite of resources to support sports, schools and the community to develop and deliver effective programs that engage youth through sport to increase their physical activity.

Busy term 1 at Kogarah Intensive English Centre

Term 1 was busy at KIEC with many new programs and excursions for the students. We also welcomed some new students! In Term 1 we celebrated Harmony Day at Beverly Hills IEC. BHIEC invited Kogarah IEC to their annural Harmony Day Celebrations.
