The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.
Kogarah Intensive English Centre offers a comprehensive Mathematics program that teaches the Australian Curriculum to students of all ages and ability. It is an immersion program that encourages students to use the mathematics they know to explore and develop the specialised English language skills that are needed to participate in mathematical discourse and to understand mathematical text. Students will gradually acquire sufficient language skills in English for them to extend their mathematical knowledge. The mathematics program provides students with the English language skills necessary for them to achieve their true potential in Australian high schools.
By studying mathematics, students develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical concepts and their use within the classroom and beyond.
The syllabus consists of the following strands:
- number and algebra
- measurement and space
- statistics and probability
Students learn to work mathematically by using the processes of:
- communicating
- understanding and fluency
- reasoning
- problem solving
